Original measurement log · Issue 01

Twelve scripts. One reference voice. Two different ideas of “thirty seconds.”

We compared a simple 135-words-per-minute estimate with the measured duration of 12 original home service voicemail scripts. The recordings use one fixed synthetic voice so punctuation and wording can be compared under the same conditions.

Measured and reviewed August 31, 2026 · Call Safety Guide Editorial Desk

Direct answer

In this small controlled set, the average script contained 71.2 words. The formula predicted 31.6 seconds, while the fixed reference voice averaged 28.3 seconds. 8 of 12 recordings finished under 30 seconds. This is a pacing calibration—not a claim about caller behavior or every human voice.

Word count predicts the neighborhood, not the exact address.

The estimated column uses 135 words per minute. The measured column is the duration of the reference WAV, including pauses created by punctuation and sentence boundaries.

Reference recordings and transcripts

These are low-bandwidth synthetic reference reads, not polished greetings and not a recommendation to replace an owner’s voice. Use them to compare pacing, then record the final script naturally.

Thanks for calling Northline Plumbing. We are helping another customer and cannot answer safely right now. Please leave your name, callback number, ZIP code, and whether you need a repair, an estimate, or help with a water heater. We review messages at noon and again at four on business days, then call to confirm service area and current availability. A message does not reserve emergency dispatch.

You have reached Northline Plumbing after business hours. This voicemail is not monitored continuously and a message does not reserve emergency service. Please leave your name, number, ZIP code, and a short description of the plumbing issue. We begin reviewing messages at eight tomorrow morning and will call to confirm the next available step. If there is immediate danger, follow local emergency guidance instead of waiting for this mailbox.

Thanks for calling Harbor Heating and Air. We are assisting customers during a high-volume weather period. Please leave your name, callback number, ZIP code, and tell us whether this is a repair, maintenance, or estimate request. We review new messages in scheduled blocks and return calls in the order they can be routed. A callback confirms capacity and the next step; it does not promise a service window or arrival time.

Thanks for calling Cedar Electrical. We may be working on a site and unable to answer. If you see fire, smoke, sparking, or another immediate danger, use local emergency guidance and do not wait for voicemail. For routine work, leave your name, callback number, ZIP code, and whether you need a repair or project estimate. We review messages within one business day and call to confirm service fit. We cannot diagnose an electrical condition from a recording.

You have reached Summit Appliance Repair. We are with a customer and cannot take the call. Please leave your name, callback number, ZIP code, appliance type, brand, and one short description of what you observed. Please do not include payment information or account credentials. We review messages by the end of the business day and call to confirm brand coverage, route fit, and appointment availability. Your description helps prepare the call but is not a diagnosis.

Thanks for calling Clear Path Pest Control. We are in the field and may not answer immediately. Please leave your name, callback number, neighborhood, where you noticed activity, and whether this is the first or a repeat observation. Do not use voicemail for exposure or medical questions. We review messages within one business day and call to clarify the observation, service area, and available inspection path. A voicemail cannot identify a pest or prescribe treatment.

Thanks for calling Bright Room Cleaning. We are helping another client right now. Please leave your name, callback number, neighborhood, the type of cleaning you need, and your preferred service day. A first message is not a complete estimate, so please do not leave access codes or payment details. We review messages by four on business days and call to confirm service area, availability, and the information needed for a quote.

You have reached Fieldline Landscaping. We may be operating equipment and unable to answer safely. Please leave your name, callback number, neighborhood, and whether you are calling about recurring maintenance, a project, or seasonal cleanup. We check voicemail in scheduled blocks and call to confirm route coverage and the next available conversation. A message does not create a site plan, confirm a price, or reserve a crew date.

Thanks for calling Waypoint Mobile Detailing. We may be driving or working on a vehicle. Please leave your name, callback number, ZIP code, vehicle type, and the main service you have in mind. We review messages by the end of the business day and call to confirm travel area, service fit, weather conditions, and schedule availability. A voicemail does not reserve an appointment, and weather may still require a change.

Thanks for calling Oak Bench Handyman Service. I may be on a ladder or using tools and cannot answer safely. Please leave your name, callback number, ZIP code, one representative project, and the week you hope to schedule it. Start with the main job rather than a complete punch list. Method and limits

Controlled enough to compare. Too small to generalize.

Fixed reference

Microsoft Zira Desktop, en-US, neutral rate, recorded as 16 kHz mono WAV files.

Simple estimate

Estimated seconds equal word count divided by 135 words per minute, multiplied by 60.

What changed

Words, punctuation, abbreviations, business names, numbers, and sentence boundaries changed between samples.

What this does not prove

The set does not measure human speaking pace, comprehension, hang-ups, conversions, or caller preference.

Apply the finding

Use the estimate to edit. Use the real phone line to decide.

A 55–70 word target is a practical first pass for many routine greetings in this fixed reference voice. Safety boundaries or dated closures may justify more time. Always test the final human recording because names, numbers, pauses, and emphasis change the result.
